Not the same as other Tag books–no word by word reading, November 18, 2009

This book does not function the same way as other Tag books. It is written in a comic book format, which in itself is fine. However, there is no book icon to press to hear it read a whole page. Instead, when you touch a thought bubble, it reads the entire thing. There is no way for it to tell you just the single word (they way all other Tag books we have work). The inability to get single word assistance takes away from the educational value of this book. Readers who are fairly proficient and just need help with larger or unfamiliar words will automatically be told the entire text instead of just the one word they needed help with.

I am taking this back to the store (thankfully, I still have the receipt and packaging)… I’m going to buy Pirates! The Treasure of Turtle Island instead.

My 6-year-old son has owned his Tag reader for a few years now and it is definately our favorite toy. The selection of books for older boys is limited, but this one is another winner. My son also loves Bakugan, Ben 10, and other “comic-like” Tag books. To be clear, this book does not have the word-by-word reading. It does look like a comic book layout with word bubbles, but my son doesn’t care. This has quickly become one of his favorites. I have been so happy with how much my son has learned from these Tag books and it has become his favorite activity before bed every night. The Star Wars book is an excellent addition to our Tag library.

I was amazed how much my 5 and 4 year olds took to this. It may be helping with their enthusiasm to learn to read. The online guide allows you to synch the Tag with the computer and follow your childs progress and areas that need attention
