My daughter received this for Christmas with a number of books. We had been fighting over the reading and writing problem for quite some time. She’s four and wants nothing to do with reading and writing. Shortly after she got it, she was sitting down wanting to do all the writing games. She’s gotten a lot better with her letters and writing and she’s had it less than a week. I think much of the value of this system depends on the books that you get for it, but I think it’s already been a wonderful educational tool for her and she shows no signs of stopping. Now instead of dreading “school time”, she keeps asking if we can sit down and do her school books together because they’re so much fun.

The only down side I can see to this system is for the parent that thinks they can hand this off to their child and walk away to do something else. That may be the case after they figure out how it all works, but until that point, adult guidance is useful. It’s worked out well for us because I sit down next to her and help her out a bit. Maybe in the future she’ll get into it more and then will be more independent, but for now it’s definitely something we have to do together.

I bought this LeapPad for my son last year and my son has been playing with it for a year now. Today I bought him a new LeapPad book and only half way through the new book, the LeapPad stopped working. At first I thought it was the batteries, but soon I figured out the problem is at the wiring of the pen. It only works when I hold the pen at a certain angle. But how can you tell a 4-year-old to hold it still all the time! It basically is a piece of junk now sitting in my garage.

My son has been playing with LeadPad products since he was 17 months old. The LittleTouch LeapPad worked great. The 2nd one (My First LeapPad) broke after one year. Now the 3rd LeapPad also broke after one year. LeapFrog really needs to improve the durability of their products.

I did not purchase this product as I found out from Leapfrog that they are discontinuing it. I e-mailed the company to be sure, and was told “We are not producing this item anymore but we still have inventory of the books on-line and at the stores.” So basically, it may be a great toy but if you intend to buy it I’d be sure to get all the books you want now, because who knows how long they will continue to be available. Their “Tag” system is the new thing they’re doing to replace this.
