Product Description

Limited Edition Gobblet Classic Deluxe Edition - Are you bored with tic-tac-toe? Think you know all the moves that will prevent you from losing? Then you've never tried Gobblet a four-in-a-row, tic-tac-toe game where you can move pieces around the board to increase your chances of winning - or losing. Simply move your piece to a vacant spot, or gobble up an opponent's smaller piece to gain the advantage. Pay close attention to the board - by moving a piece, you may uncover a previously gobbled up token that will have your opponent declaring victory. It includes wooden game board and storage area, 24 wooden Gobblets, and instructions. This game is for two players. Blue Orange plants two trees for every tree used to produce their games.

Not as "upscale" as you'd think

I'd never played Gobblet before, but the "Deluxe Limited Edition" looked nice and "classy" in pictures and the game itself sounded interesting. I figured I could leave it out on a coffee table, since it's easy for two people to pick up and play -- much more accessible than Chess. Now that I own it, I wouldn't suggest buying this game thinking you are getting a super-high quality, well-built, classy toy. I was very disappointed in the build quality.

First of all, it has an extremely strong lacquer smell right out of the box and also comes coated in a dusty residue. There were several dings and imperfections in the wood itself, and the actual finish is not great. It looks like it was either not sanded well or the lacquer was spray-painted on; it is just not that smooth and even.

Since it's wood, you'd think it'd be more durable than your typical plastic game, but I have my doubts. The pieces themselves are very thin wood and would probably be susceptible to cracking or breaking completely if dropped on a hard surface. The storage box and lid are thin as well.

At first glance this is still one of the best looking games in my collection, but up close it's nothing to write home about. It definitely hasn't earned it's spot out on the coffee table based on looks, but it will definitely be one of the first games I grab when I'm headed to a friend's house.
Excellent gameplay, poor hardware

The gameplay is fantastic. It is easy to learn but complex to play. A simple concept of connect 4 has become a tempest of memorization, deception, and traps. Your strategy will want to vary game to game so your opponent doesn't catch on to all your little tricks.

While the gameplay is easily 5 stars, the hardware is about 2 stars. The wood finish is rough and uneven with splotchiness. The wood glue had already failed in a few spots upon opening the package. The inner box that holds the pieces had detached from the base so I had to glue it together. The playing surface is composed of 2 pieces of wood that are already separating so I will probably have to re-glue it someday. On a positive note, it is nice having an indentation at each position which prevents pieces from shifting during play. The pieces are solidly constructed but like the board, the finish is poor.

Overall, Gobblet is a great game but this particular set is pretty poor. I would gladly pay more for a truly "Deluxe" version.
